Workshop Description

This Workshop was for the Committee on Hazard Mitigation and Resilience Applied Research Topics to gather data for their first consensus report on the theme "Equitable and Resilient Infrastructure Investments". The Workshop featured five panels consisting of academics, community leaders, and industry experts on this topic.

The goal of this workshop was to determine unmet applied research needs of equitable and resilient infrastructure investments in the field of hazard mitigation and resilience. Panelists will be asked to address the topics, below, with consideration to:

Strategies and investments to improve services, functions, access, and equity across infrastructures for resiliency to hazards and extreme events.
Challenges and opportunities within these strategies and investments that may benefit from further investigation and research to facilitate better outcomes.

About

This two-day public workshop, organized and conducted by a committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, will focus on enhancing the resilience of supply chains to impacts from climate change, with attention to critical federal supply chains. The workshop will convene experts from the federal government, the private sector, the philanthropic community, academia, and non-governmental organizations to identify climate impacts on supply chains and help identify potential research needs and possible strategies related to strengthening supply chain climate adaptation and resilience. The workshop will use the Food and Agriculture supply chain as a tangible case to investigate climate issues for supply chains, with the intention that participants can extrapolate these discussions and considerations across other sectors (e.g., fuel, technology).

The audience for the workshop includes individuals and groups responsible for or involved in federal supply chains in all sectors; individuals or groups in the federal government responsible for developing Climate Action Plans; and Public- and Private-sector supply chain professionals concerned with strengthening supply chain resilience to climate change, including local stakeholders. Workshop participants will discuss and share their perspectives on public and private sector roles, with a focus on operations experts at the corporate scale that produce and move the bulk of food in US; the needs and concerns of local- and community-level stakeholders of food and agriculture supply chains, with a focus on climate impacts to local food security, economic security, and nutrition; and opportunities for the federal government to increase the resilience of its supply chains broadly, through regulation, education, infrastructure, and other tools, with a focus on the range of innovations, adaptations, and data that can facilitate increased resilience. A Proceedings of a Workshop in Brief will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.

This activity is supported by the PGA Science and Technology for Sustainability program and funds from the National Academies George and Cynthia Mitchell Endowment for Sustainability Science. The workshop theme and topics build upon the 2021 workshop series Fostering Sustainable and Resilient Supply Chains with Emerging Technologies.
