The Strategic Council for Research Excellence, Integrity, and Trust
Established in 2021, the Strategic Council for Research Excellence, Integrity, and Trust serves as a venue for multiple stakeholders to advance collectively the integrity, ethics, resilience, and effectiveness of the research enterprise, while at the same time preparing it for tomorrow's challenges. Through meetings, public workshops, and publications, the Strategic Council will develop guiding principles, highlight best practices for improving research, and connect stakeholders throughout the research eco-system.

Our vision is to foster creative and effective solutions to ensure today's and tomorrow's research enterprise performs with integrity, fosters excellence, and produces trustworthy results.
The set of high-level goals outlined below will be used to focus the work of the Council and to align the working groups and activities within the Council’s broader mission. The goals are expected to evolve as the Council’s work and the factors facing the scientific enterprise also evolve. The goals are guided by a vision and mission derived from the Council’s mandate.
Promote alignment of incentive structures within the research enterprise to encourage trustworthy, ethical scientific results.
Identify and communicate the norms of excellent research characterized by quality, integrity, and ethical research practices.
Encourage wide-spread adoption of tools and methods proven or judged by expert opinion to increase efficiency, integrity, and quality of research.
Description
The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine will convene The Strategic Council for Research Excellence, Integrity, and Trust that will be charged with: identifying, anticipating and prioritizing key challenges to research ethics, integrity and trustworthiness (e.g., conflicting and ineffective requirements, gaps in guidance, problems in multidisciplinary and big-team science, problematic incentive systems, lack of tools or awareness, barriers to inclusion and equity, etc.); articulating principles, policies and best practices to address them; catalyzing progress by coordinating collaborative action; and breaking barriers where needed to accelerate solutions, be they conceptual, technological, cultural, or procedural. The Strategic Council will serve as a venue for multiple stakeholders to advance collectively the integrity, ethics, resilience, and effectiveness of the research enterprise while at the same time preparing it for tomorrow's challenges.
