About

Critical supports and resources within the STEMM research ecosystem are shifting in reaction to rapid changes in institutional, regional, and national environments. In addition, decisions made by external groups and individuals can have a dramatic and profound influence on the well-being, professional development, and interpersonal and mentoring relationships of graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty. Building upon the conversations held during the first two Roundtable workshops, the goal of this third public workshop is to apply a systemic lens to explore the ways in which individuals, departments and offices, and institutions are addressing and navigating these common challenges.

The Roundtable on Mentorship, Well-being, and Professional Development will be holding an open session on the roles, responsibilities, expectations, and benefits that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate students and postdoctoral scholars serve and receive across the U.S. STEM enterprise. Through this session, the Roundtable is hoping to explore the current landscape and history of graduate student and postdoctoral scholar labor movements, including questions such as:

What are the current expectations of STEM graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and how have these changed?
Why are these critical members of the STEM ecosystem turning to unionization and collective bargaining?
What is the full extent of this current movement?
What might the STEM community learn from the movement towards unionization and collective bargaining?

Despite the significant contributions of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to scientific research, the environments in which they work and learn may constitute a detrimental and toxic "hustle culture," often offering inconsistent mentorship and professional development opportunities and only intermittently addressing their mental, financial, and social well-being. This workshop will use an intersectional approach to explore the “knowing-doing gap” as a framework to help faculty and institutions understand and develop strategies that bridge current systemic and cultural barriers to the support and promotion of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in the STEMM research ecosystem.
