Engineers are limited in their ability to adapt and mitigate asphalt pavements’ vulnerability to moisture damage. Climate models favor increased atmospheric moisture, adding urgency behind the need to understand effective countermeasures. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern that examined the current state of the knowledge and critical knowledge gaps with respect to asphalt pavement moisture damage. Presenters covered basic mechanisms related to moisture damage, examined experimental methods, and presented current models for evaluating moisture damage impacts.

Two significant advances have recently emerged in predicting the in-place strength of concrete for pavements and facilitating earlier opening of pavements. The first is the development of a new American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) maturity test method for pavements. The second is ASTM C1074, an advancement in sensor technology, which captures time and temperature data from the field. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Eastern that informed agencies and practitioners of these new approaches. Presenters shared a case study from Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and how they utilized the maturity concept for determining early opening strengths for the past 25 years.

Where in a system labor, equipment, and materials usage costs are captured can make a difference in the level of detail, accuracy, and timeliness of the cost information collected. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, September 26, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern that helped agencies navigate the process of integrating cost data into the MMS to effectively manage and track maintenance expenditures. Convened by TRB, the 7th International Conference on Women and Gender in Transportation (WGiT) will be held September 9-11, 2024 at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, CA. The conference theme is "Progress and Possibilities: Bridging Perspectives". It highlights how far recognition of gendered issues in transport have come, while also noting the important work ahead to bridge inequities. This will work require spanning disciplines, departments, scales, and organizations.
Across the globe, crucial gender differences exist in people's mobility needs, access to transport, experiences while mobile (e.g., safety and security), and workplace advancement. Gender biases also exist in infrastructure provision and service delivery. These differences limit the access of women and other gender minorities (transgender, non-binary, third-gender, etc.) to economic opportunities, healthcare, employment, information, and education. Uneven transport experiences also intersect across other social factors such as race, age, class, immigration status, and (dis)ability. These uneven experiences limit social cohesion.
Since 1978, the conference (formerly known as the International Conference on Women's Issues in Transportation) has served as a forum to highlight how gender considerations can be incorporated into the traditionally male-dominated transport sector. In 2024, participants and speakers will represent transportation practitioners, researchers, educators, consultants, businesses, advocacy groups and other stakeholders from around the world. Local, tribal, state, and national government agencies will also be represented.

Bridge life-cycle and performance under earthquakes is critically impacted by the effects of climate change phenomena such as scour, sea level rice, tsunamis, and permafrost degradation.
