Convened by TRB, the 2025 TRB Annual Meeting is held January 5-9, 2025 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C.

The TRB Annual Meeting attracts thousands of transportation professionals from around the world. The program covers all transportation modes, with sessions and workshops addressing topics of interest to policy makers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions.

Specialty workshops take place on Sunday, January 5 and Thursday, January 9.

TRB Webinar: Anticipated Truck Loadings in Pavement Design—Part II

Changes to truck operations and the associated loads will impact both existing and new flexible and rigid pavements, making them an important consideration for owner agencies. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, December 19, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM Eastern that facilitated proactive considerations to changes in pavement loading due to advancements in truck technology. These advancements impact current pavement design methods for durable and resilient pavements in the future. Presenters shared international initiatives on pavement technology strategies to address needs such as increased axle loads due to the weight of batteries and an increased loading frequency from truck platooning.

This webinar was the second of a two-part series that will explore potential advancements in truck technology such as electric trucks, truck platooning, CAVs, and their impacts on pavement performance, design methods, and maintenance. The first webinar, Anticipated Truck Loadings in Pavement Design—Part I, was held on November 25, 2024.

The transportation sector is advancing towards full digital product delivery and digital as-built objectives within civil infrastructure. This transformation is driven by the goal of a fully end-to-end digital, asset-centric, interoperable data flow. However, current methodologies still rely on outdated concepts, such as 2D/1D plans and profile/cross-section sheets, which are disconnected from modern construction goals that demand the integration of open building information modeling (BIM) and digital twin technologies. To effectively achieve these goals, it's essential to address the existing geospatial and geodesic inconsistencies between real-world conditions and virtual 3D models. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Eastern that raised awareness within the department of transportation (DOT) community about the critical need to resolve ambiguities between virtual 3D models and real-world conditions.

TRB will host a webinar on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern that provided an overview of NCHRP Web-Only Document 381: Developing Laboratory Methods and Specification Language to Test Tack Coat Materials, highlighting key findings from the study, including recommended changes to tack coat material specifications. Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls are widely used in transportation projects due to their cost-saving, time-efficient, and resilient nature. Recently, American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and Federal Highway Administration have outlined new design changes to improve the service life of the walls in the FHWA Geotechnical Engineering Circular (GEC) 011. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM Eastern that provided background and an overview of four design approaches for MSE walls: the coherent gravity method, the simplified method, the stiffness method, and the limit equilibrium method. Presenters discussed how to select the appropriate parameters for the design of MSE walls based on geometry, facing, reinforcement, and backfill utilized.

In stressful emergency transport and evacuation situations, individuals with sensory disabilities may face greater difficulties. Emergency management resources, considerations, and techniques can overcome increased threat perception, as well as various mobility and communication barriers. Post-World War II houses, subdivisions, and commercial properties are being considered for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Additional guidance is needed for determining eligibility for commercial properties that stand alongside suburban and exurban roadways. Benefit-cost analysis (BCA) can be used screen and select projects funded by federal grants. The current narrow framework is insufficient to integrate impacts of current policy emphasis. Researchers around the globe are experiencing similar challenges and opportunities. Environmental effects, active transportation health benefits, and social equity/income distribution are some of the considerations congruent with current federal policy emphasis. Further research and development is needed. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, November 21, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Eastern that covered the latest in BCA from the perspective of transportation agencies that require and rely on them and innovative practitioners who develop them. U.S. Department of Transportation offers ways BCA practices can evolve while staying true to core fundamentals. Presenters discussed best practices, analytical gaps, and approaches to improve its usefulness.

Extreme weather events cause damage and destruction of transportation infrastructure, leading to significant rebuilding costs, user delay, and inconvenience. Actionable and quantitative procedures can incorporate geotechnical resilience into the existing design and management framework of transportation asset life-cycles. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, November 14, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM Eastern that covered current geotechnical asset resilience practices and advancements in the broader framework of transportation asset management (TAM), project planning, and life-cycle analysis. Presenters shared areas for development and practice improvement by incorporating performance of geotechnical features in pavement and structural contexts. Presenters also explored procedures to incorporate resilience in geotechnical asset design and the assessment of geotechnical asset resilience during service life using monitoring and modeling of cascading events.

Convened by TRB, the Conference on Advancing Additive Manufacturing and Construction in Transportation will be held November 7-8, 2024 at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, CA. The AM process and AC applications are linked by 3D printing technical concepts. This global forum will identify future transportation research needs by providing an idea of what is possible based on how the technology is being used now.
Participants will better understand how increased use of AM can affect logistics, supply chains, movement of goods, and related fields. In addition, conference attendees will explore research into AC that is used in large-scale mobile AM (i.e., gantries, extruded structures, forms, molds and systems). Attendees will include researchers from federal and state public governmental agencies, universities and colleges, non-governmental organizations, as well as private contractors and consultants.
Speakers and panelists will organize at least two tracks focusing on overarching issues to help decision makers and transportation officials prepare for expanded AC and AM adoption. In 2019, an earlier conference held in Washington, D.C. examined the state-of-the-art and explored some of the first connections between the technology and transportation.
