The U.S. National Committee for Mathematics (USNC/Math) represents the United States in the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and promotes the advancement of the mathematical sciences. The IMU, a member of the International Council for Science (ICSU), is an international, non-governmental scientific organization that endeavors to: Promote international cooperation in mathematics. Support and assist the International Congress of Mathematicians and other international scientific meetings or conferences. Encourage and support other international mathematical activities that contribute to pure, applied, or educational mathematical science development. The National Academy of Sciences is the U.S. adhering body to the IMU. The USNC/Math operates within the National Research Council's Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO). 		Citation Statistics Report Released In 2007, the Executive Committees of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM), and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) established a committee on "Quantitative Assessment of Research" to investigate various aspects of impact factors and similar statistics based on citations. On June 11, 2008, the IMU has released the report "Citation Statistics," which focuses on reviewing and discussing current practices along with extensive literature on the use of citations to evaluate research. The recommendations provided in this report should be considered by decision-makers who use citation data in research assessment. Click here to access the report.
