International Congress of Mathematicians 2026*

The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) will be held July 23-30, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At its meeting in Helsinki, Finland, in July 2022, the 19th IMU General Assembly voted to accept the bid from the United States of America to host ICM 2026 and the 20th IMU General Assembly, with Philadelphia as venue for the ICM and New York City for the General Assembly. The congress coincides with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the 40th anniversary of the last ICM was held in the U.S. The ICM offers a rare opportunity to meet some of the world's leading mathematicians and be inspired by the vast diversity of today’s mathematics. Many USNC/M members were instrumental in the bid of the ICM and continue to be engaged in the planning of the conference. Learn more at the International Mathematical Union website.

International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2022*

The International Mathematical Union (IMU) announced on February 26, 2022, that the International Congress of Mathematicians 2022 (ICM 2022), previously planned for St Petersburg, Russia on 6 - 14 July 2022, have changed due to the Ukraine-Russia conflict. The ICM will now take place as a fully virtual event, hosted outside Russia, but following the schedule originally announced. Participation in the ICM will be free of charge. The IMU General Assembly (GA) will be in-person on July 3-4 in Helsinki, Finland. The GA is an importance governance meeting where elections are held and budgets are approved. The IMU then will hold award the 2022 IMU prizes in person at the same venue on July 5. In further explaining the new schedule, the IMU Executive Committee stated, “We have considered the possibility of postponing the ICM by one year, similar to what happened with the Warsaw ICM. However, it is unclear how the situation will evolve within a year, and thus this is not a feasible option. Another option discussed was to cancel the ICM completely. The IMU considered this option as unnecessarily drastic, and it would not serve the mathematical community. In this day and age, we have the option of carrying out a fully virtual ICM, following the original schedule of the ICM. Speakers can choose to submit recorded talks, or give live talks. We understand that different time zones will make this problematic for many, but an ICM has a tight program, and we see few alternatives." Learn more at the International Mathematical Union website.

Event - Current Foci of USNC/Math

The U.S. National Committee for Mathematics conducts virtual meetings and consults regularly by email. Current foci include ICM 2022; the possible U.S. bid for ICM 2026; the need for increased visibility of the IMU in the United States; broadening the reach of the IMU to include more of the interface of mathematics with Statistics and Data Sciences; and major prizes in mathematics.

Event - IMU General Assembly and International Congress of Mathematicians, 2018*

The most recent IMU General Assembly and International Congress of Mathematicians took place July 29 - August 9, 2018 in Brazil. The U.S. delegation to the IMU General Assembly consisted of Eric Friedlander (Chair), Alice Chang, Kristin Lauter, Ken Ono, and Ken Ribet. The USNC and the Simons Foundation organized a U.S. reception and a breakfast for early career U.S. mathematicians. Learn More (http://www.icm2018.org/)

Possible U.S. Bid for ICM 2026

International Mathematical Union (IMU) organizes a quadrennial IMU General Assembly and the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM). Bids for these meetings are organized and submitted several years in advance. The U.S. National Committee for Mathematics is currently pursuing serious discussions with U.S. mathematical societies, mathematics institutes, and potential funders a possible U.S. bid for ICM 2026. This would give the United States a chance to showcase mathematics in this country, and improve visibility and outreach. It would also serve as a draw for mathematicians in nearby countries. The financial expectations of hosting country are considerable, usually costing $5-6 million to host, so fundraising will be the biggest challenge. Among other things, the host country is expected to raise travel funds, and waive the registration fees for developing countries. Bids for ICM 2026 need to be submitted by 2021.

Event - USNC Hosts IMUs Remember Maryam Mirzahkani Exhibit at JMM 2020*

The USNC for Mathematics sponsored the Remember Maryam Mirzahkani exhibit at the Joint Mathematics Meeting (JMM) 2020 in Denver, Colorado. This exhibit was organized by the IMU’s Committee for Women in Mathematics (CWM) to honor the work and life of Maryam Mirzahkani, the only woman ever to have won a Fields Medal.
