A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine ad hoc committee will organize the 2016 Gilbert W. Beebe Symposium. Its focus will be on commemorating the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident and discussing the achievements of 30years of studies on the radiation health effects following the accident and future research directions. More specifically, symposium participants will discuss:

• Advances in dosimetric methods for assessing radiation exposures from the accident.
• Immediate and late health effects of plant employees and first responders diagnosed with acute radiation syndrome following the accident.
• Late health effects from radiation exposures (e.g., thyroid cancer due to internal exposure, leukemia, other cancers).
• Congenital disorders from radiation exposures (e.g., Down syndrome, congenital heart disease, other malformations).
• Non-cancer health effects from radiation exposures (e.g., cataracts, circulatory diseases, other).
• Psychological health effects due to the accident.
• In utero exposure to radiation and thyroid cancer and other health effects in offspring.
• Potential transgenerational effects of parental radiation exposure.
