TRB Webinar: Advances in Unstable Slope Instrumentation and Monitoring

November 23, 2020

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM (EST)

Past

Unstable slopes affect almost every state transportation department in all types of geographies. TRB hosted a webinar on Monday, November 23, 2020 from 1:00-2:30 PM Eastern that explored the geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring technologies that are used to inform safety, operational, and treatment decisions for these slopes. Presenters discussed technology advancements that are creating positive outcomes across many systems. They identified how these advancements may improve safety for workers and travelers, reduce operational disruptions from unstable slopes, and optimize cost and risk tolerance decisions over the life-cycle.

This webinar draws on research from the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis Report 554: Advances in Unstable Slope Instrumentation and Monitoring.

The slides and recording of the webinar are available.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. State of the practice: Mark Vessely, BGC Engineering
  2. Case examples: Scott Anderson, BGC Engineering
  3. Conclusions and opportunities for future research: Cole Christiansen, BGC Engineering
  4. Question and answer session: Moderated by Derrick Dasenbrock, Federal Highway Administration

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss current practices foruse of instrumentation and monitoring technology in state highway departments
  2. Apply practices to instrumentation and monitoring on unstable slopes
  3. Assess instrumentation and monitoring technologies for treatment of unstable slopes
