Roundabouts are scalable intersections that can conform to a number of physical restraints that a location may present to a designer. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, April 8, 2021 from 2:00-3:30 PM Eastern that discussed how to build roundabouts using a design tool for the “swept path” of trucks. This tool utilizes truck characteristics and driving patterns at different sized roundabouts, and measures truck axle arrangements. Presenters described how modeling these truck metrics within a roundabout can encourage adaptability and changing of model settings to achieve a realistic swept path for trucks. They illustrated design assumption information related to truck characteristics in order to provide methods that may lead to better intersection control for users.
This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Technical Committee on Roundabout and Other Intersection Design and Control Strategies. It also features research from NCHRP Report 505: Review of Truck Characteristics as Factors in Roadway Design, NCHRP Report 572: Roundabouts in the United States, and NCHRP Report 672: Roundabouts: An Informational Guide – Second Edition.
