TRB Webinar: Protocols for Macrotexture Measurement to Prevent Wet Weather Crashes

October 27, 2022

2:30 PM - 4:00 PM (EDT)

Past

Pavement surfaces become polished over time due to traffic and weather conditions, leading to more wet weather crashes. Macrotexture refers to the texture of the pavement due to the arrangement of aggregate particles. This has a strong influence on vehicle-roadway skid resistance. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, October 27, 2022 from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM Eastern in which presenters discussed protocols for test methods, equipment specifications, and data quality assurance practices for network-level macrotexture measurement. Collecting accurate and repeatable texture data provides agencies with valuable information that will help identify high risk locations for wet weather crashes.

This webinar was based on NCHRP Report 964: Protocols for Network-Level Macrotexture Measurement.

This webinar was sponsored by the TRB Standing Technical Committee on Pavement Surface Properties and Vehicle Interaction.

The slides are linked in the meeting materials. View the recorded webinar below.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  • Methods for collecting and characterizing macrotexture data – Gerardo Flintsch, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
  • Equipment for macrotexture measurements – Emmanuel Fernando, Texas A&M Transportation Institute
  • Question and answer session moderated by Jenny Li, Texas Department of Transportation

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Collect accurate and repeatable macrotexture data
