Past
Bridge life-cycle and performance under earthquakes is critically impacted by the effects of climate change phenomena such as scour, sea level rice, tsunamis, and permafrost degradation. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern that discussed the impacts and mitigation of climate change effects on the ability of bridges to resist seismic demands. Presenters provided strategies and recommendations to address impacts.
This webinar was based on Special Report 290: Potential Impacts of Climate Change on U.S. Transportation.
This webinar was sponsored by TRB Standing Technical Committees on Foundations of Bridges and Other Structures, Seismic Design and Performance of Bridges, Safety and Security of Bridges and Structures, and Extreme Weather and Climate Change Adaptation.
The slides are linked in the meeting materials. View the recorded webinar below.
Webinar agenda and presenters
Alaska perspective on how climate change impacts bridge design – Nicholas Murray, Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities
Importance of codification for climate change challenges in bridge seismic design – Sissy Nikolaou, National Institute of Standards and Technology
Warming permafrost, climate change, and its impacts on seismic design and increased liquefaction hazard – John Thornley, WSP
California’s response to climate change and seismic design – Christopher Traina, California Department of Transportation
Question and answer session moderated by Ariadne Palma Parra, North Carolina State University
The first 60 minutes of the webinar were for presentations and the final 30 minutes were reserved for audience questions.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants can:
Gain insight into how climate change impacts bridge structures, including the growing risk of liquefaction
Understand how practitioners are actively addressing current challenges posed by climate change
Address the effects of climate change on bridge structures using recommended actions
