Beyond the Event
This workshop was intended to serve as a catalyst for the Gulf Research Program’s (GRP’s) future efforts related to energy transition topics across the Gulf of Mexico region. By bringing together 22 stakeholders with a diverse range of expertise and lived experience, the GRP aimed not only to foster a community that could remain engaged with the GRP’s future efforts but also to encourage communication and collaboration among the different stakeholder groups involved in the Gulf’s energy transition. Indeed, the serious game format led to a collaborative atmosphere with new connections and greater understanding of many diverse perspectives.
As the GRP moves forward from this event, efforts are underway to elicit further involvement and engagement from the workshop participants, and to continue expanding GRP’s outreach to stakeholders representing energy transition interests across the Gulf region. Thus far, a subset of workshop participants served on a panel at the February 2023 GRP Division Committee meeting where they offered ideas on future energy transition programming and identified specific needs for the Gulf region moving forward. The GRP also plans to use this proceedings and the information provided by the workshop participants to develop a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Standing Committee focused on how the GRP can impact and influence the energy transition in the Gulf region. Particularly as deadlines for net-zero goals and utility-scale implementation of new energy sources move ever closer, the GRP aims to continue incorporating diverse voices to help ensure a safe and just energy transition in the Gulf of Mexico.
