Standing Committee for Earth Observations, Data, and Information Systems

The Standing Committee on Earth Observations, Data, and Information Systems will provide an ongoing and focused discussion forum for foundations, companies, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and academic institutions supporting and using large-scale Earth observation, data, and information systems. The standing committee will engage perspectives on these issues from across the many sectors that contribute to Earth observations and consider needs and opportunities within and across all components of the Earth system.

Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a Standing Committee for Earth Observations, Data, and Information Systems to provide an ongoing and focused discussion forum for foundations, companies, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and academic institutions supporting and using large-scale Earth observation, data, and information systems. The Standing Committee will consider scientific priorities, technical innovations, and coordination opportunities for observations, data, and information systems related to major components of the Earth system, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere. The Standing Committee will convene key thought leaders and decision makers in meetings, workshops, and webinars to support community-wide learning and coordination. The Standing Committee will also serve as a portal to relevant activities from across the National Academies. Priority areas will include activities that:

  1. Provide ongoing input on broad, system-wide issues and coordination.
  2. Enable exchange of experience and insights among initiatives, sponsors, relevant scientific communities, and other interested parties.
  3. Elevate issues of importance for the Earth system science research community, including emerging research priorities and technologies, opportunities for coordination, user needs and applications, and work force development.
  4. Connect and engage with international entities addressing these topics.
