To Mark Earth Science Week, National Academies Host Events Related to Cross-Cutting Issues in the Field
Program News
Last update October 14, 2024
The National Academies is hosting a series of geoscience meetings that coincide with American Geosciences Institute’s (AGI) Earth Science Week, October 13-19, 2024. Each year, the AGI engages communities worldwide through activities that promote awareness of the geosciences that help us understand forces shaping Earth’s past, present, and future. The 2024 theme “Earth Science Everywhere” highlights the widespread influence of Earth science and geosciences in our daily lives, including our homes, products, cities, transportation, and much more.
Join us this week and beyond for our free, virtual events centered on Earth science and its applications. Also, you can view a recording of a recent meeting on Partnerships, Innovations, and Opportunities in Geohealth – our kickoff meeting for this series of events.
October 15, 2024, from 1-5pm ET
Geophysical Consequences and Applications of Space Weather
Space weather variations can be associated with beautiful aurora displays to harmful effects on technological infrastructure. This meeting will explore the consequences and applications of space weather phenomena to geophysical questions.
October 16, 2024, from 10am-2pm ET
This meeting will consider how critical infrastructure is designed and constructed across active faults and identify areas in need of improvement. Other topics include: How are fault displacement hazards identified and characterized? What are the considerations that inform this decision making? How are post-event responses typically incorporated into engineering design and where are there gaps in practice?

Recovery from Dynamic Events: Geospatial Data and Tools for Disasters and Conflicts
Using geospatial applications, data, and lessons learned from disaster recovery we can develop new methods for recovery from other dynamic events, such as conflict and refugee zones, by leveraging tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing technologies, and advanced data analytics. This meeting will explore how geospatial data and tools for disasters may be used to improve recovery from other dynamic events, such as conflicts.
November 20, 2024, from 11am-3pm ET
Geothermal energy is a promising source of global, carbon-free, affordable power and heat, but barriers to widespread geothermal deployment still remain. Advancing geothermal energy involves addressing technical, economic, and regulatory challenges to fully leverage its broad range of capabilities. This meeting will bring together experts to address these challenges and future opportunities to advance these efforts.
These events are organized by the National Academies Board on Earth Sciences and Resources, which provides a focal point for activities related to Earth science policy. Through its committees, panels, and working groups, it oversees a wide range of Earth science issues, including research, the environment, natural hazards, resources, geographic science and geospatial information, and data and education. It also provides guidance on U.S. participation in international Earth science programs.
