The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are launching Climate Crossroads, a major new initiative to help the nation meet the challenges of climate change.

For decades, the National Academies have studied climate issues and advised policymakers and organizations on approaches to build resilience, decarbonize, and explore new or emerging solutions to complex and interconnected challenges. The global community is in a crucial window for taking steps to address the numerous threats that climate change poses to the planet and society.

The new Climate Crossroads initiative will serve as a nexus point within the National Academies, allowing the organization to chart new pathways for sustained national and global leadership over the coming decades. Climate Crossroads will leverage the disciplinary breadth of the organization, provide space to be responsive to new challenges, and expand the impact of the Academies’ work to a more diverse range of stakeholders and decision-makers including by developing new ways to work with underrepresented communities.

“The National Academies are committed to marshaling the deep and broad expertise that this moment demands,” said Amanda Staudt, Climate Crossroads director. “Climate Crossroads will support our capacity to help prepare society for current and future challenges and opportunities in the context of climate change, including by allowing us to proactively identify emerging needs, initiate activities quickly, and sustain leadership over decades to come.”

Climate Crossroads is seeking a broad range of experts to steer its work and shape future activities. The work of the Climate Crossroads will kick off at a major convening on July 11 and 12 at the National Academy of Sciences building in Washington, D.C.
