On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we join our fellow Americans in pausing to remember all who were lost and to think of their families.  At the same time, we recall the bravery and heroic sacrifices of first responders and ordinary citizens on that tragic day.  We honor those who served in the military after 9/11 to fight terrorism, as well as all those now in uniform who continue to defend our freedoms. 

We must never forget the suffering, nor the courage, that we witnessed on 9/11, and how the country came together in response.  In that spirit and true to our mission, the National Academies continue to stand ready to serve the nation by considering how science, engineering, and medicine can be used to protect and support the well-being of our country and the world.
