The National Academies are excited to announce that Kasey White has been selected as the next Director for the Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (BASC) and the Polar Research Board (PRB). In this role, White will oversee the Boards’ large portfolio of work on climate change and its impacts, air pollution, and severe weather, changes in the polar regions, and other topics crucial to the health, safety, and welfare of people across the globe. "Atmospheric sciences, climate science, and polar research are more important than ever to confront the challenges facing our world,” said White. “I'm excited to guide the work of these boards and continue collaboration across the National Academies."
Kasey Shewey White brings extensive experience supporting and advancing scientific research and facilitating its use in service to society. Most recently she served as Director of Climate Policy for the Niskanen Center, where she led a team to develop and advance research-based, constructive polices to address climate change. For more than a decade, White served as Director for Geoscience Policy at The Geological Society of America.
"I've often relied on National Academies reports in my previous positions, so the chance to get hands on with this essential, evidence-based scientific work—that I and so many others depend upon — is a tremendous opportunity,” said White. She previously worked at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Geosciences Institute, and Joint Oceanographic Institutions. White served as a co-editor of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report Climate Change 2001: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability, which was awarded a share of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. She holds a BA in Environmental Science and Policy from Duke University, an MA in Environmental Sciences from The Johns Hopkins University, and an Executive Certificate in Transformational Leadership from Georgetown University.
