The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have released a new proceedings of a symposium that explored how research and higher education institutions should transform in the next 75 years to better address complex global challenges such as responding to pandemics, advancing innovation, and building and nurturing research capacity.

Held in September 2022 in partnership with the Kavli Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the event was a follow-up to a 2020 symposium that marked the 75th anniversary of the publication of Vannevar Bush’s seminal report Science: The Endless Frontier, which created a blueprint for U.S. scientific research in the post-World War II era.

The 2022 symposium brought together leaders of U.S. academic and government research institutions, policymakers, and executives from the private sector and philanthropic organizations to continue exploring the future of science. The new publication summarizes the symposium’s presentations and discussions on the structure of institutions and the scientific enterprise, the translational gap between discovery and innovation, the scientific workforce pipeline, and the societal benefits of the scientific enterprise.
