Standing Committee

A Standing Committee for the Review of the Dietary Reference Intakes Framework

Since 1994, the U.S. and Canada have co-sponsored the development and publication of a harmonized set of nutrient-based Dietary Reference Intake values. Over time, a need for a standing committee to address over-arching issues related to DRI concepts to facilitate a consistent approach for reviewing and setting DRIs has developed. The standing committee’s work will inform new DRI reviews for macronutrients, future DRI reviews for other nutrients, and DRI-related issues more broadly, including their application.

Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will continue the standing committee to review the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) framework, structure, and process relevant to future DRI reviews. The committee will continue to consider past experiences and learning from previous DRI reports, including the report on "Guiding Principles for Basing DRIs on Chronic Disease", the recent meeting of experts, "Strategic Planning for a New Review of Macronutrient Dietary Reference Intakes," and other relevant documents related to the DRI process such as "Development of DRIs 1994-2004: Lessons Learned and New Challenges". The standing committee will respond to questions relevant to the DRI framework and structuring new DRI reviews as questions arise from various DRI consensus committees. The sponsor will utilize its learning from the standing committee discussions to inform future DRI reviews. The standing committee may provide input to DRI consensus committees as requested.
