Advances, Challenges, and Long-Term Opportunities of Electrochemistry: Addressing Societal Needs - A Workshop

Completed

Advances in electrochemistry are enabling new developments in energy storage, energy conversion, catalysis, separations, and instrumentation. This workshop will (1) review emerging applications of electrochemistry, (2) discuss instrumentation, educational, human resource, and other needs to enable advances in electrochemistry, and (3) forecast new technologies and processes that could be developed given breakthroughs in fundamental and applied research in electrochemistry. Ultimately, the workshop will explore the future of electrochemistry, which could transform technologies across various applications.

Description

An ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will plan and host a public workshop in Washington, DC to discuss the advances, challenges, and long-term opportunities of electrochemistry. Specifically, the workshop will (1) explore fundamental (multidisciplinary) research to advance the science that underpins electrochemical technologies, (2) review advances in applications of electrochemistry, (3) discuss instrumentation, educational, human resource, and other needs to enable advances in electrochemistry, and (4) forecast new technologies that could be developed or enabled given advances in fundamental and applied research in electrochemistry. Ultimately, the workshop will provide a forum to explore advances in electrochemistry that could develop and transform technologies across various applications. A workshop proceedings, authored by a rapporteur, will be published after the workshop
