Forum on Temporomandibular Disorders

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Forum on Temporomandibular Disorders provides an ongoing mechanism and neutral setting in which the full spectrum of public and private sector experts and stakeholders will explore opportunities for collective action to improve temporomandibular disorder (TMD) research and care. The Forum considers emerging issues in TMDs, facilitates cross-sector action, and fosters long-term multidisciplinary relationships – all focused on improving research and care for people living with TMDs.

Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will establish a Forum on Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs). The Forum will bring together interested parties from across relevant public and private sectors to foster long-term multidisciplinary relationships and cross-sector and interprofessional collaboration; explore opportunities for collective action; and address emerging issues in TMD research and care. The Forum will:
• Spur greater understanding of the complex etiology of TMDs and their related conditions.
• Consider multidisciplinary research efforts into the causes and potential treatments for TMDs.
• Explore opportunities to bridge the medical-dental practice divide.
• Inspire action to improve access to appropriate and high quality TMD care.
• Explore issues related to insurance coverage and costs of TMD care.
• Consider approaches for increasing awareness and reducing stigma among patients, health care professionals, and the public.
• Address the bioethical aspects of TMD research and care.
As funding allows, the Forum will meet two or three times per year to provide an ongoing mechanism and a neutral setting to address topics such as those listed above. All activities of the Forum will be conducted in accordance with institutional guidelines.
