U.S. National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM)
This U.S. National Committee represents the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) at the national level.
In progress
Any project, supported or not by a committee, that is currently being worked on or is considered active, and will have an end date.
"We serve as a focal point for charting future priorities in mechanics related research, applications and education."
Over the years, the field of mechanics has expanded significantly and today impacts our daily lives in a myriad of ways. Research and applications in mechanics span the whole gamut of spatial and temporal scales, going from atomistic and molecular scales to the planetary scales. Theoretical, experimental, and computational methods in mechanics enable the solution of engineering and science problems of contemporary importance in health and medicine, climate and sustainability, safety, transportation, and space exploration. Our committee serves as a focal point for the mechanics activity in the U.S., charting the course for research, applications, and education and outreach.
USNC/TAM is an affiliate of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), where it represents the United States in the activities related to the broad science of mechanics. Our leadership includes prominent researchers in academia and national laboratories, as well as representatives from industries. All major professional societies where mechanics plays an important role are represented by leading members of the societies. This composition enables us to closely coordinate mechanics-related activities between the associations and sectors and to more effectively support and promote mechanics as a discipline. View committee.
We support and promote mechanics as a discipline in a variety of ways:
Every four years, USNC/TAM holds its flagship meeting, the US Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, as one of the premiere venues in the US for the dissemination of mechanics research.
To support young mechanicians, we established a Young Observers program and Travel Fellowships for PhD students and Postdocs.
We host yearly thematic meetings like the AmeriMech, as well as our Hibbitt Distinguished Lectures, Webinars and Technical Report series.
Our pilot K-12 outreach program allows mechanicians to engage with students in the classroom and at industry workshops.
USNC/TAM is always seeking to engage with new collaborators and sponsors. Contact Ana Ferreras Fiel to learn more about how to engage with us:
