Call for proposals to host the 21st U.S. National Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the meeting to be held in summer 2030

The U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM) is soliciting proposals from institutions wishing to host the 2030 U.S. National Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. Every four years since 1950, the U.S. has hosted a National Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in order to foster and promote the exchange of ideas and information among the various disciplines within the mechanics community, and to chart future priorities in mechanics-related research, applications and education. The Congresses cover a broad range of topic areas in mechanics and are well attended by mechanicians from both industry and academia. Please find the full PDF that lists proposal requirements, venue expectations and details the timeline of the proposal which has a deadline of March 20, 2025.The 2026 U.S. National Congress will be in Los Angeles, CA from June 21-24, 2026. It is being collaboratively hosted by Caltech, UCLA, and USC. If your institution is interested in hosting the Congress, please contact Tom Pence, Secretary of the USNC/TAM and chair of the site selection subcommittee, for information on developing your proposal (pence@egr.msu.edu). The USNC/TAM is eager to work with interested parties during proposal development. Proposals should then be submitted electronically to: Tom Pence (pence@egr.msu.edu) and Horacio Espinosa, Chair of the USNC/TAM (espinosa@northwestern.edu).

Fellowship - Thomas J.R. Hughes and USNC/TAM Fellowships

As part of its efforts to promote mechanics, the committee awards two categories of travel fellowships - the Thomas J.R. Hughes Fellowship and the USNC/TAM Fellowship. These are awarded to young researchers (graduate students and postdocs) attending the US National Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and its international counterpart ICTAM*. Multiple fellowships are offered in each of the two categories and cover the attendee’s the registration fees and travel expenses (up to a certain limit). Both fellowships receive many applications and are highly competitive. The committee selects the awardees of both fellowships through a transparent process. The funds for the USNC/TAM Fellowship are obtained from our sponsor, the National Science Foundation. The Thomas J.R. Hughes Fellowship funds come from an endowment handled by Northwestern University. UNSC/TAM Announces 2022 Young Observers

The USNC/TAM is pleased to announce that two 2022 Young Observers have been chosen from an excellent slate of nominees. The choice of two Young Observers allows for a balance in representation between solid mechanics and fluid mechanics. The two Young Observers are Prof. Hussein Aluie from the University of Rochester, and Prof. Yashashree Kulkarni from the University of Houston. See below for more information on these outstanding mechanicians. Prof. Aluie’s research falls under the broad umbrellas of fluid dynamics and nonlinear science, with a current interest in problems from oceanography, astrophysics, high-speed flows, and inertial confinement fusion as an alternative energy source. The techniques and approaches used range from careful high-performance computing to analyzing data from satellites and experiments, and from semi-empirical physical reasoning to abstract mathematical analysis and proving rigorous theorems. Prof. Kulkarni’s research focuses on understanding the mechanical response of materials from fundamental scales using atomistic simulations and multi-scale modeling approaches. Current research topics include statistical mechanics of fluctuating interfaces; time-scaling in atomistic simulations; mechanical properties of nanotwinned metals. Public Lecture Series - Annual USNC/TAM Distinguished Lecture

The U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM) proudly announces the Hibbitt Distinguished Public Lectures on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. The objective of this series is to convey excitement, stimulate interest, and discuss opportunities in the mechanical sciences and engineering related to advances in infrastructure, automation, transportation, energy, biomedicine, sustainability, exploration, and other areas. The targeted audience includes students and teachers interested in STEM fields at high schools across the nation and the general public. The annual lectures are free and open to the public. USNC/TAM Members Elected to NAE

Horacio D. Espinosa, James and Nancy Farley Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University, was elected NAE member in 2020. Kathleen Stebe, Goodwin Professor of Applied Sciences and Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, and Glaucio Paulino, Margareta Engman Augustine Professor of Engineering at Princeton University, were elected NAE members in 2021.

Remembrance - Professor Emeritus Jan D. Achenbach

Professor Emeritus Jan D. Achenbach, Walter P. Murphy and Distinguished McCormick School Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering, passed away at age 85 on August 22, 2020. Achenbach was a world leader in the mathematical study of wave propagation in solids and in the theory of ultrasonic methods of quantitative non-destructive evaluation of materials. He also made significant contributions of permanent value in the mechanics of non-linear and dynamic fracture. He was an expert in applied mechanics and quantitative nondestructive evaluation and received the National Medal of Technology and the National Medal of Science. Achenbach was a member of both the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Sciences. He served as member of U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from February 20, 1987 to October 31, 1994, and as ex-officio member from November 1, 1994 to October 31, 2016 due to his honorary IUTAM appointment as member at large. The USNC/TAM Young Observers Program*

The USNC/TAM has developed a new initiative called the USNC/TAM Young Observers Program, which invites member professional societies to nominate a young scholar to be an observer at the committee’s annual meeting. The observers will gain experience in science policy and diplomacy through exposure to the functions and responsibilities of the National Committee, as well as learning about opportunities for further engagement with USNC/TAM. A young professional in this program is considered to be someone who is within 10-15 years of receiving his or her PhD and/or first professional appointment in an engineering or related field. The committee anticipates selecting one or two observers each year after reviewing the nominations received from professional societies. Nominees and nominators will be notified of the committee’s decision by December. Sinan Keten from Northwestern University was selected as the first Young Observer.

IUTAM Virtual General Assembly, August 25-26, 2020

The National Academies appointed the U.S. delegation to the IUTAM General Assembly in 2020. The Chair of the delegation is Krishnaswamy Ravi-Chandar (The University of Texas at Austin), and the members are: Horacio Espinosa, NAE member (Northwestern University), Linda Franzoni (Duke University), Beverly McKeon (California Institute of Technology), and Gareth McKinley, NAE member (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). All of these individuals are members of the USNC/TAM. Americans provide substantial leadership in the union. IUTAM Bureau: Nadine Aubry (NAE member) from Northeastern University continues to serve as President through October 31, 2020; she then will serve a term as Past-President. As current President of IUTAM, she also serves as President of the Congress Committee. Robert McMeeking (NAE member) from University of California, Santa Barbara also serves on the IUTAM Bureau as Secretary of the Congress Committee. Other U.S. members of the IUTAM Congress Committee include Ann Karagozian (NAE member) from UCLA, Horacio Espinosa (NAE member) from Northwestern University, Eric Shaqfeh (NAE member) from Stanford University, and Huajian Gao (NAE and NAS member) from Brown University. All the current Congress Committee terms expire in October 31, 2020. The IUTAM Symposium Panel Chair for Solid Mechanics, who is responsible for chairing the review of IUTAM Symposia and Summer Schools proposals, is Huajian Gao (Brown University). His term ends in October 31, 2020 as well. At the IUTAM 2020 General Assembly, the following Americans were elected members of the Congress Committee to serve from November 1, 2020 to October 31, 2024: Gareth McKinley (NAE member) from MIT, Kate Stebe from University of Pennsylvania, Ellen Arruda (NAE member) from University of Michigan, and Cate Brinson from Northwestern University.

Horacio Espinosa, James and Nancy Farley Professor of Manufacturing and Entrepreneurship at Northwestern University and member of the USNC/TAM, has been elected NAE member in 2020 for his contributions bridging nanoscale experimentation and atomistic simulations.

Event - USNC/TAM Endorses IACM Conference in 2021

The objective of this conference is to facilitate the transition of Mechanistic Machine Learning (MML) and digital twins (DT) from fundamental research to mainstream fields and technologies through the fusion of mechanistic data science, computational technologies, and education and training. The conference will feature technical tracks of emerging MML-DT fields and applications, special public lectures, education programs, short courses and demonstrations. With the support of a scientific committee that includes more than one hundred colleagues from academia, governments and industries around the globe, this conference will bring together the diverse communities that are interested in learning, developing and adopting mechanistic machine learning and digital twins to a broad range of engineering and scientific applications, and promote collaborations between engineers, data and computer scientists, mechanicians, and mathematicians from academia, federal agencies, and industry. USNC/TAM Past Chair Elected to the National Academy of Engineering*

The U.S. National Committee for TAM congratulates past chair Gareth McKinley on his 2019 election to the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. McKinley was formally inducted into the NAE in October 2019, among 86 new members and 18 new foreign associates. Proceedings of a Workshop Now Available for Latest Additive Manufacturing Workshop

A series of international workshops grew out of the USNC/TAM's initial 2015 U.S. additive manufacturing workshop, including a U.S.-EU workshop held October 24-26, 2018 in Germany. "Integrated Mechanistic Data-Driven Modeling for Additive Manufacturing" was led by Michelle Schwalbe, Director of the Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics at the NASEM. The 2018 workshop convened leading additive manufacturing experts in online monitoring, science of materials and mechanics, optimization and controls, and qualification and certification, as well as experts from relevant mathematics, statistics, and data science communities from both the United States and the European Union. Presentations from 2019 USNC/TAM Meeting Available

The USNC/IUTAM held its annual meeting on March 29-30, 2019 in Washington, DC. This meeting is essential for the committee to not only respond to and prepare for IUTAM meetings and activities, but also to plan national initiatives that advance the field and groom the future generation of American mechanicians. Members of the USNC/TAM discuss delegations, nominations, proposals, programs, and activities each year at the annual meeting. This allows the United States to be active and well represented, and to utilize opportunities through our adherence to IUTAM. The USNC also discusses topics of scientific research, which may vary from Communicating Science in the 21st Century to Accelerating Materials and Discovery using AI and Machine Learning.
