Expanding Cervical Cancer Screening and Preventive Therapy (CCS&PT) through Introducing New Technologies and Integrating with Voluntary Family Planning
PEER Cervical Cancer Screening and Preventive Therapy (CCS&PT) seeks to facilitate the introduction and scale-up of innovative CCS&PT approaches in Malawi and Mozambique that can be implemented in conjunction with voluntary family planning activities, with a focus on generating evidence to inform sustainable scale-up of cervical cancer control programs in lower- and middle-income countries. A primary focus of this partnership is to leverage longstanding investments in voluntary family planning programs, as well as other efforts to address cervical cancer. Following a competitive peer review process, two projects were selected for support in March 2019 and ended in September 2023.

Description
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is the U.S. Government’s preeminent foreign assistance agency. The agency is dedicated to helping nations meet the needs of their citizens by providing health-care, education, and economic opportunity to end extreme poverty and promote democratic, resilient societies. The Innovation, Technology, and Research (ITR) Hub of the agency's Bureau for Development, Democracy, and Innovation leads USAID’s use of field experimentation, open innovation, and digital technology to transform development approaches. The Hub remains on the forefront of science and technology to incorporate breakthrough innovations into USAID’s programs and policies, and applies the latest tools, like artificial intelligence and impact bonds, to address key development priorities. A key element of this strategy is the support of scientific and technological research through the Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) program. PEER is a competitive awards program that invites scientists in developing countries to apply for funds to support research and capacity-building activities on topics of importance to USAID and conducted in partnership with U.S. Government (USG)-funded and selected private sector partners. The program is supported by USAID but implemented by the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The PEER CCS&PT sub-program seeks to facilitate the introduction and scale-up of innovative CCS&PT approaches in Malawi and Mozambique that can be implemented in conjunction with voluntary family planning activities, with a focus on generating evidence that will inform sustainable scale-up of cervical cancer control programs in lower- and middle-income countries. A primary focus of this partnership will be to leverage longstanding investments in voluntary family planning programs, as well as other efforts to address cervical cancer, and to build capacity in partner countries to sustainably address the burden of cervical cancer. The program will involve the solicitation of grant proposals, organization of expert review, management of grants selected by USAID, and convening of capacity building activities for the participants.
