Recognizing that emerging leaders possess the energy, insights, and communication skills needed to advance the dialogue on our most pressing challenges, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (National Academies) established the New Voices program in 2018 to bring fresh perspectives from mid-career professionals to important dialogues around how science, engineering, and medicine are shaping the global future.
New Voices members have served this mission by lending their time, energy, and expertise to enhance scientific and policy solutions to address national and global challenges. Each interdisciplinary cohort serves a two-year term before transitioning to active alumni status and is supported by a staff office at the National Academies and an Advisory Committee made up of senior leaders dedicated to the New Voices mission. Current cohort members meet monthly via Zoom and also convene in person twice a year for a two-day meeting. They also work on producing webinars and other public events as part of their service.
New Voices membership provides the opportunity to:
- Participate in a prestigious network of emerging leaders working across the disciplinary boundaries of the sciences, engineering, and medicine.
- Explore interdisciplinary approaches to addressing critical global issues through working groups and ad-hoc project committees.
- Learn how the National Academies impact science policy at the federal level and join the network of experts called upon to participate in the process.
- Get involved with the global engagement of young scientists, engineers, and medical professionals.
- Represent New Voices at international forums with other young science leaders and senior experts across the world.
- Impact your organization and local community by bringing back lessons learned.
