Addressing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism In 21st Century STEMM Organizations: A Summit

Completed

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) will convene a national summit that will highlight how racism operates at different levels in science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEMM) settings; identify policies and practices for confronting systemic racism; and identify ways to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEMM settings. Particular attention will be paid to the effect of systemic racism on the careers of individuals belonging to racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in the STEMM workforce. These groups include Black/African American, Hispanic/LatinX, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian, and Pacific Islander communities.

Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will appoint a planning committee to organize and convene a 2-day, public webcast summit to explore the empirical and experiential evidence related to the ways in which systemic racism and other barriers impede STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine) careers for historically marginalized racial and ethnic groups, and explore ways to address these barriers, including strategies undertaken by stakeholder communities.
A brief proceedings will be produced to capture the discussion at the summit.
