The NASEM's Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources (BANR) marked its 75th anniversary in mid-2019. Since 1944, BANR has martialed the nation’s most talented scientists and practitioners to advise policymakers and engage the public on the crucial, contemporary issues affecting food, agriculture, and the nation’s natural resources.
To celebrate and expand its impact, BANR is working with academic institutions across the United States to co-organize and host the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources 75th Anniversary Lecture Series.
The series will stand as a tribute to the contributions of scientists to informing public policy historically and in the future.
Description
Established by the NRC in 1944, the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources (BANR) will use its 75th anniversary year as a platform for engagement with and outreach to the U.S. food and agricultural sciences community, positioning the work of the National Academies and the Board as an extension of the research enterprise into science policy.
The engagement mechanism will be a series of events (Lectures/Seminars) that are proposed, funded, and organized locally by colleges of agriculture and natural resources at land-grant and other institutions in coordination with and under the guidance of BANR. These events, held monthly at different locations across the U.S. during 2019-2020, will spotlight emerging scientific themes that are locally important and emblematic of the kind of issues addressed by BANR. The activities should engage students, faculty, and the private sector; raise awareness of how the research conducted by the academic community underpins science-policy work; and provide opportunities for cultivating a greater understanding of the significance of the work of the National Academies and BANR.
