Astrochemistry: Discoveries to Inform the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Communities -- A Workshop

Completed

Given the acceleration in discoveries in recent years with the installation of new facilities, this workshop will

(1) explore the chemistry of space—its novel chemicals and reaction mechanisms
(2) discuss information from remote sensing through spectroscopy
(3) consider discoveries from spacecraft missions in the solar system and laboratory studies of extraterrestrial samples

Ultimately, the goal of the workshop is to explore how the methods and discoveries of astrochemistry might provide insights or opportunities for advancing the chemical sciences and engineering. Come join us for an informative selection of plenary talks and in-depth panel discussions.

Description

An ad hoc committee will plan and host a public workshop in Washington, DC to inform the chemical sciences and engineering community about discoveries being made in astrochemistry. Specifically, the workshop will (1) examine how discoveries of novel molecules and reaction mechanisms in space might be used to inform chemistry or engineering problems, (2) explore how cutting-edge advances in spectroscopic analysis are being used in astronomy and their potential applications in the chemical sciences, and (3) discuss how the analysis of other planets and interstellar bodies, such as meteorites, can help to inform our understanding of the earth’s geochemistry at present and its evolution through time. The overall goal of the workshop is to explore how the methods and discoveries of astrochemistry might inform or provide opportunities for advancing the chemical sciences and engineering. A workshop proceedings, authored by a rapporteur, will be published after the workshop.
