Potential Human Health Effects of Surface Coal Mining Operations in Central Appalachia

This study examined potential health risks for people living near surface coal mine sites in Central Appalachia, including evaluation of relevant literature on air, water, soil, and ecological impacts and characterization of geology and regulatory frameworks.

NOTE: On August 18, 2017, DOI’s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement informed NASEM that it should cease all work on this study. This study was not restarted nor was a product released.
