On November 18-19, the National Academy of Engineering's Cultural, Ethical, Social, and Environmental Responsibility in Engineering (CESER) Program and the National Academies' Committee on Human Rights (CHR) conducted a symposium exploring issues at the intersection of engineering and human rights. Goals of this symposium included increasing awareness of the role engineers play in protecting and promoting human rights and exploring ways human rights-based approaches to engineering might help engineers and human rights experts solve pressing challenges.

Description

The National Academy of Engineering’s Cultural, Ethical, Social, and Environmental Responsibility in Engineering (CESER) Program and the National Academies’ Committee on Human Rights (CHR) will conduct a symposium exploring issues at the intersection of engineering and human rights. Goals of this symposium include: (1) increasing awareness of the role engineers play in protecting and promoting human rights, (2) exploring ways human rights-based approaches to engineering might help engineers and human rights experts solve pressing challenges, and (3) collecting information to identify areas of impact for future CHR/CESER efforts. Focus areas may include, but are not limited to:

· Engineering, Human Rights, and Climate Change

· Engineering and Human Rights in International Development

· Human Rights and Emerging Technologies

· Human Rights in Engineering Education and Practice

CESER and CHR staff will convene a planning committee comprised of ~6 experts in human rights and engineering. The symposium is expected to take place over 1.5 days and will be hybrid to facilitate attendance, inclusion, and engagement with a wide audience while also providing flexibility for in-person attendance. Deliverables are planned to include an online posting of videos of the event and related materials and a National Academies publication in the form of a Proceedings or Proceedings—in Brief produced in accordance with institutional guidelines.
