The fields of engineering, basic, and applied sciences are often absent in discussions about education on forced displacement. As a result, students in science and engineering programs are frequently unaware of the complex challenges surrounding displacement and are ill-positioned to help address these challenges in their studies and future careers. The Committee on Human Rights of the NAS, NAE, and NAM has partnered with the Center on Forced Displacement at Boston University to explore opportunities in higher education for teaching STEM students about forced displacement and equipping them with the skills necessary to help address forced displacement-related challenges.

Description

As of 2022, more than 100 million people have fled their homes due to war and persecution, as well as the effects of climate change and other disasters. Despite displacement being one of the great global challenges of our time, insufficient attention is paid to this issue within higher education. Specifically, the fields of engineering, basic, and applied sciences are often absent in discussions about education on forced displacement. As a result, students in science and engineering programs are frequently unaware of the complex challenges surrounding displacement and are ill-positioned to help address these challenges in their studies and future careers.

In response to this concern, the Committee on Human Rights (CHR) of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and National Academy of Medicine and the Center on Forced Displacement (CFD) at Boston University are exploring opportunities in higher education for teaching STEM students about forced displacement.
