Topics

As a part of a cooperative effort with Resolve to Save Lives (an initiative of Vital Strategies), NASEM identifies and contracts with African and U.S. reviewers with scientific and regional Africa expertise to provide peer review of reports on Public Health and Social Measures (PHSM) for COVID-19. NASEM also works with the Nigerian Academy of Sciences, the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, and the Academy of Science of South Africa to disseminate these report findings.

The country and regional reports, along with the survey data, can be found here.

Description

NASEM will identify and contract with experts to provide rapid peer-review of reports, country briefs, data collections, analyses, and findings developed by Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) on non-pharmaceutical interventions for COVID-19 in Africa. Each review will be conducted by at least five experts; three of which will be from target regions or countries in Africa. After RTSL has finalized the findings, factoring in peer-review comments, NASEM will work with at least three key African Academies of sciences and the network of African science academies to disseminate those findings. NASEM will assist with the dissemination effort, which will include providing the findings in multiple forms to officials in the target countries’ governments, including ministries of health, military medical organizations, heads of government (where possible), and other relevant parties, as appropriate. Finally, the dissemination network in Africa will provide feedback on the format of the findings (how they could be made more useful), how these findings fit with other efforts in the countries that they are reaching, and any results of RTSL's advice, including actions taken within the target countries. This effort will not result in a NASEM publication or NASEM-branded product.
