As bat populations in the United States continue to decline, transportation structures such as bridges and culverts provide important opportunities for the conservation of both common and endangered species. Due to statutory requirements and their role as responsible stewards, state departments of transportation face the challenge of balancing conservation efforts with the need to provide and maintain safe, effective transportation infrastructure.
NCHRP Web-Only Document 438: Deterring Bats from Transportation Infrastructure: Methods and Results describes the work of NCHRP Project 25-63, which included literature reviews, controlled field studies, and the creation of protocols and tools that culminated in the release of NCHRP Research Report 1166: Strategies for Deterring Bats from Transportation Infrastructure.
NCHRP Research Report 1166 presents guidance for selecting and implementing methods to temporarily deter and/or exclude bats from transportation structures before and during construction and maintenance activities. The guide outlines techniques that are both sensitive to the biological needs of bats and effective across a variety of geographical regions, project types, and site conditions. It also includes sections that define key terminology, introduce bat ecology in the United States, and describe how to identify when and why bats may be present in transportation structures.
