Airports collect, process, and use large volumes of data from airport users, including personal identification, biometric, and payment information. The methods airports use to manage this data are evolving rapidly as new technologies emerge. As a result, airports must plan and prepare to adequately protect data and individual privacy—or risk violating applicable laws, incurring costly remediation efforts, and losing public trust.
ACRP Research Report 281: Data Protection and Privacy Management at U.S. Airports: Guidelines, produced by TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program, is designed to help airport operators understand current data practices, build awareness of compliance requirements, and incorporate data protection and privacy management into their business and operational activities. The report identifies major airport data-collection use cases; defines their purposes, data subjects, and associated actions; and highlights key issues and concerns. It also addresses implementation challenges, emerging legal trends, and recommended practices.
