The rapid pace of technological advancements is changing how people and goods move through communities. The transportation workforce is adapting to the expansion of emerging technologies that have raised awareness of challenges that are inhibiting the industry’s ability to efficiently and effectively leverage their value. Although every transportation agency’s strategy for workforce adaptation is unique, there is a widely acknowledged need for additional resources that can support decision-making, promote continued investment, and focus training efforts to better prepare the industry’s workforce.
NCHRP Research Report 1174: Preparing the Transportation Workforce for Emerging Technologies: A Guide, produced by TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program, addresses recruitment, development, and retention of a workforce proficient in developing and deploying complex emerging technology. For the purpose of this guide, technologies that are considered emerging represent those in which applications of such technology are not widely used by transportation systems management and operations agencies. The guide is designed to help enhance the agility, adaptability, and preparedness of transportation agencies to bolster their workforce’s resiliency to change and enable the capitalization of benefits offered by emerging technologies.
