While some airports have begun implementing artificial intelligence (AI) applications and experimenting with emerging technologies to address business and operational needs, most airports—including many smaller facilities—continue to rely on traditional systems. Compared with other industries, airports have been slower to adopt and test new technologies, largely due to operational complexity, the need for uninterrupted service, and stringent safety and regulatory requirements.
ACRP Web-Only Document 67: Exploring the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Airport Industry, produced by TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program, provides an overview of AI technologies and applications relevant to airports, including the opportunities and challenges associated with implementing AI to support airport business and operations.
