Airport ramp areas—relatively small, busy, and congested workspaces—can be dangerous for ground workers and other personnel. Activities on the ramp include servicing aircraft, baggage loading and unloading, and catering and fueling services. In addition, airport employees, security personnel, FAA staff, airline personnel, construction workers, and others may be present on ramps. Ramp operations take place in an environment characterized by high activity density, the simultaneous use of ground support equipment and aircraft, and demanding schedules. These conditions significantly increase the potential for occupational injuries and fatalities, as well as damage to aircraft and equipment.
ACRP Synthesis 143: Ramp Safety Practices: Update, produced by TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program, provides information on training programs and technologies used to address ramp safety, the roles of airport operators and tenants in implementing safety practices, and how airports foster a strong ramp safety culture. The synthesis also explores key aspects of human factors, communication, and performance measures in ramp safety practices.
