Our ability to describe and project human movement and activity past, present and future is improving as new quantitative data and tools emerge to understand population dynamics. However, in times of crises or other disturbances, the readiness of quantitative data often lags and can be too slow to define real-time dynamics. The integration of qualitative or thick data with quantitative may offer approaches to construct a real-time understanding of forced migration. This webinar explored these questions: What are the data (qualitative and quantitative) and tools needed to better track human movement and displacement as close to real-time as possible? What are the limits, opportunities, and errors associated with those data? What qualitative data is accessible, and what are the ethics of using it? How do we visualize and communicate these integrated datasets?

About: Human, environmental and coupled human-environmental systems are incredibly complex, constantly in flux and evolving. To adapt to and mitigate geographic change across local to global scales necessitates new approaches and technologies to geographic information gathering and analysis. Potentially filling this gap are emerging sources of novel geospatial data, which include nanosatellite (e.g. CubeSats, Planet) imagery, mobile phone data, open source mapping, georeferenced and mobile sensors, and social media. Yet, while these new and frequent data sources offer exciting opportunities to respond more rapidly to geographic dynamics, they come with their own set of challenges, which go beyond unclear sampling frames, data quality and veracity. Equally important, they often increase the amount of data exponentially, which creates challenges to quick analysis and data management. It is increasingly clear that the underlying information architectures that enable the analysis of such geographic information are being outpaced by ever-increasing data volumes.

In this meeting, we will discuss ways to approach and leverage novel geospatial data, analytics and platforms to understand and assess rapid and profound geographic change. We will discuss the geospatial data science, infrastructure and resource challenges, focusing on human displacement, movement and migration due to sudden and dramatic physical and human events.

This meeting is co-hosted by the Mapping Sciences Committee and the Geographical Sciences Committee.

Geographical sorting of populations by race, ethnicity, income, education, political attitudes, and other factors are significant contributors to disparities in individual and social exposure to environmental toxins and risks. This workshop will explore how geospatial data can be used to analyze and mitigate social inequalities and the social and community ties to environmental health and justice. Please join us in our discussion on how to leverage geospatial technologies to inform environmental health decisions and steps for moving forward to address the societal challenge of environmental justice.

Geospatial Needs for a Pandemic-Resilient World

Epidemics and pandemics such as the COVID-19 outbreak have clear geographic dimensions due to the vector spreading the virus (human contact), demographics and co-morbidity factors that vary geographically, the distributed and heterogeneous nature of health care systems, and the highly variable response and interventions from political authorities and the public-at-large. The decline and shifts in human activity also affect broader social, economic and environmental systems to varying degrees. Geospatial information can play vital roles in crafting effective government and societal responses at the operational, tactical and strategic levels.
This workshop will explore the needs of federal agencies, organizations, and scientists for geospatial data science to understand and respond to epidemics/pandemics and developing infrastructure and policies that facilitate effective management and graceful recovery from these types of shocks.
