The third and final webinar in this three-part series will explore strategies for attracting and preparing the next generation of professionals in research administration and compliance—key roles that support the ethical and responsible care and use of animals in research.

Panelists will discuss how institutions can engage undergraduate students, trade-school and community college students, and early-career professionals by raising awareness of career opportunities in animal research oversight and compliance. The conversation will highlight practical approaches to identifying and promoting internship, volunteer, and professional development opportunities that introduce students and early-career individuals to these vital aspects of the research enterprise.

Drawing from real-world examples, panelists will share insights on how students discover and access these opportunities, and how organizations can make pathways into compliance and research administration more visible, inclusive, and rewarding. The discussion will also touch on how established employees can continue to grow through mentorship and ongoing professional development.

The webinar will include Q&A, offering participants the opportunity to engage with panelists about actionable strategies for building awareness, accessibility, and sustainability of career pathways in research administration and compliance involving the care and use of animals.

This form, created to serve as a foundational resource, outlines the minimum requirements for an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocol, providing clarity and utility for researchers and institutions. While not endorsed or mandated by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) or Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), it is offered as a valuable tool to support best practices.

The webinar will feature presentations and discussions to demonstrate the form’s application, highlight its key features, and engage participants in meaningful dialogue about its use.

This event is hosted in collaboration with the Roundtable on Science and Welfare of Animals Involved in Research, a collaborative body under the Board on Animal Health Science, Conservation, and Research of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

One year after the adoption of the Contingency Rule, the Roundtable on Science and Welfare of Animals Involved in Research, under the auspices of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, convened a group of experts for a workshop to evaluate the rule's impact and the evolving strategies in safeguarding animal and plant health and well-being. The workshop focused on engaging with relevant communities to clarify the evolving definitions in the Contingency Rule, analyze the adoption of the Contingency Rule across different research institutions, and delved into the evaluation of training program effectiveness and retention rates in these institutions.

The workshop resulted in the publication of a Proceedings in Brief, due to release in 2024, which summarizes the workshop, including the successes, challenges, and lessons learned from the implementation of the final USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service's Contingency Planning Rule.

After one year of implementation of the USDA APHIS Contingency Planning and Training of Personnel Rule 2022, the workshop planning committee is looking to understand the successes, challenges, and lessons learned from this rule.

Join us for an engaging workshop hosted by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, aimed at advancing the communication of scientific research involving animals. The Planning Committee will gather experts to share and explore tools and strategies that enhance public understanding of the scientific method, the care and use of animals, and the vital contributions of animal research to the health and well-being of both animals and humans.

Key topics of discussion include effective communication methods for scientists to engage with non-experts, using case examples to address misconceptions related to animal research. The workshop will also delve into systemic changes in the integration of scientific information by journalists, filmmakers, and others, leveraging diverse communication media and advanced technologies for various public audiences.

Participants will explore ways to assess the success of communication efforts, with specific focus on challenging aspects of animal research that are often misunderstood by the public. This includes the context, applications, and value of animal research activities, ethical and regulatory requirements for humane animal care and use, alternative methodologies, interpretation of results, and combating disinformation.
