Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions information can be used to measure, allocate, and reduce emissions across many sectors. By gathering accurate and efficient data on GHG emissions, we can gain important insights on reducing these emissions that contribute to climate change and monitor the impact of mitigation policies on the level of carbon in the atmosphere. This webinar will feature two technical presentations from Shelie Miller (University of Michigan) and Karthik Ramanna (University of Oxford) defining the core concepts of GHG emissions information and current and future use cases for GHG emissions information. A discussion, moderated by Alicia Seiger (Chan Zuckerberg Initiative), will focus on the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating artificial intelligence into GHG emissions information-gathering processes. A Q&A session with the audience will follow.

Historically, weather forecasts have been manually calculated based on barometric pressure, current weather conditions, and cloud cover, using data collected over time to make forecast models, identify trends, and investigate weather phenomena for a specific location. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into weather forecasting allows models to digest large amounts of weather data, generating timely and accurate forecasts, which can then be used by emergency services, utility companies, agriculture industries, and the general public to make decisions. This includes improving the speed and reliability of extreme weather forecasts. However, there are challenges associated with integrating AI into extreme weather forecasting models and ensuring the AI outputs are accurate and trustworthy. Through technical presentations, Dr. Gabriele Messori (Uppsala University) and Dr. Amy McGovern (University of Oklahoma) will overview how AI is being used in forecasting extreme events. A discussion, moderated by Dr. Jonathan Overpeck (University of Michigan), will follow to highlight technical challenges associated with using AI for extreme weather events forecasting, advances in AI support decision-making, and opportunities to improve forecasting moving forward.

Earth systems forecasting is a combination of short-term predictions and long-term projections about climate conditions for a particular location. The outputs of earth systems forecasting models can predict and project climate for a certain place, at a certain time. However, there exist challenges regarding collecting sufficient data for scales and filling gaps between modeled scenarios. Through technical presentations, Dr. Pierre Gentine (Columbia University) and Dr. Chris Bretherton (University of Washington) will overview the history of earth systems forecasting. Model emulators, which are simplified versions of larger, more complex models, are used to simulate future weather and climate events, providing valuable information for both short-term forecasting and long-term climate predictions. Through technical presentations, Dr. Greg Elsaesser (National Aeronautics and Space Administration Goddard Institute for Space Studies [NASA GISS] & Columbia University) and Dr. Claudia Tebaldi (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory [PNNL]) will identify how AI can be utilized to enhance weather and climate simulations and models, highlight the overarching technical challenges associated with integrating AI, and explore the most promising applications. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool that has the potential to revolutionize the approach to many climate-related actions—from optimizing energy use to predicting extreme weather. As we harness and expand the applications for AI technologies, it is essential to ensure these models are accurate and reliable and find ways to mitigate the climate impacts of AI data center energy use. The National Academies’ Roundtable on Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change will foster ongoing discussions, shared learning, and nimble coordination around emerging issues related to AI and climate change. This Roundtable will explore both how AI can combat climate change and the environmental impact of AI itself. It will also examine the energy consumption and climate effects of AI technologies and strategies for mitigating those impacts.
