Standing Committee on Artificial Intelligence Technologies and Emerging Impacts
Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have seen dramatic developments in recent years. AI promises productivity gains and breakthroughs in various fields, but also raises concerns about adverse consequences and long-term risks. This standing committee will track emerging AI technologies and their societal, ethical, and policy implications. It will focus on such dimensions as national competitiveness, national security, and the role and responsibilities of the research community that develops AI technologies.

Description
The Standing Committee on Artificial Intelligence Technologies and Emerging Impacts, organized under the auspices of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB), will track and explore technical advances in AI and related policy developments, and consider emerging technical, societal, ethical, and policy issues with a focus on technological developments and emerging implications for national competitiveness, national security, and the role and responsibilities of the AI research community. It will itself identify topics for deeper exploration via standing committee discussions, workshops organized by separately appointed planning committees, rapid expert consultations, or consensus studies and serve as a resource for AI-related activities across the National Academies. In addition to working closely with CSTB, it will coordinate its work with the National Academies' Forum on Cyber Resilience on issues concerning the resilience of AI systems and with other relevant activities across the National Academies.
