This one-hour webinar will feature state efforts to control health care cost growth. Building on his recent Health Affairs article, Chris Koller from Milbank Memorial Fund will explore evidence and opportunities for action. Leaders from several states will share perspectives on their efforts, ranging from setting targets to voluntary alignment. Webinar objectives include examining and discussing different approaches, related implementation issues, and advantages and disadvantages of different state approaches.

The vast U.S. health care sector is barely comprehensible with annual, national health expenditures estimated at $5.0 trillion in 2024. That level of spending, and public and decisionmaker knowledge of it, have a range of implications for efforts to improve population health.

A more complete picture of health care spending would be helpful--exploring various perspectives on where the money goes, constraining cost growth, increasing value, rebalancing (e.g., a shift to primary care and prevention). There is no single source of publicly available and easy to use information for collective use by policy makers, purchasers and the public to achieve those purposes. How have current federal, multi-payer, and state systems addressed these questions?

Moving toward standard measures on health care costs could inform policies to do something about those costs. This webinar brings together data producers (national and state) with data users and other experts to present and discuss the key issues and explore opportunities for improvement.
