Description
In response to a 2005 request from the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine formed a standing Committee on Personal Protective Equipment for Workplace Safety and Health. The committee provides a forum for discussion of scientific and technical issues relevant to the development, certification, deployment, and use of personal protective equipment, standards, and related systems to ensure workplace safety and health.
The committee coordinates and meets with the NPPTL multiple times per year to become informed of existing conditions and emerging issues related to personal protective technology and to define prospective activities (such as studies or analysis of respiratory protection, sensor systems, and other technologies and standards) to be conducted at the National Academies. Further, the committee provides liaison to ad hoc study committees requested by NIOSH and approved by the National Academies in the area of respiratory protection.
