Session 1: The Impact of the Virtual Laboratory Experience on Undergraduate Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Education

Tuesday, August 18, 2020 from 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM (ET)

In the wake of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, undergraduate chemistry and chemical engineering programs across the United States have transitioned into an online learning environment. The implementation of virtual labs has been far from uniform across chemistry and chemical engineering programs. Some educators critique the value of online laboratories, which they say lack the in-person supervision necessary to adequately train students and track their progress. Others are looking for new ways to navigate the online learning environment by experimenting with lab videos, lab kits, and virtual reality simulation software.

This session will explore how virtual labs can and cannot help fulfill the key learning objectives of undergraduate chemistry and chemical engineering programs.

Session 2: A Future for Sustainable Chemical Manufacturing

Wednesday, August 19, 2020 from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM (ET)

Sustainable chemical manufacturing aims to produce end products using fewer resources and creating less waste, thus setting up the industry – and the planet – for a sustainable future. Sustainable manufacturing goals have traditionally been influenced by societal pressures and legislative guidelines.

This session will explore the scientific and systems knowledge needed to establish meaningful and attainable sustainability goals.
