TRB Webinar: One Pack to Rule Them All–The Cone Penetration Test Expansion Pack

June 29, 2021

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM (EDT)

Past

Cone penetration tests (CPT) determine the geotechnical properties of soils. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 from 2:00-3:30 PM Eastern that identified available CPT sensor modules, tools, and in-situ tests available beyond standard CPT investigations. Presenters discussed sensors that include seismic and pore-water pressure. They also highlighted case studies that have used non-standard CPT tools to convey these methods’ added value.

This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Technical Committees on Geotechnical Instrumentation and Modeling, and Soil and Rock Properties and Site Characterization.

The slides are linked in the meeting materials below. Click here to view the recording.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. CPT probe modules for site characterization: Diane Moug, Portland State University
  2. Case example of improving field practice: Gerald Verbeek, Eijkelkamp North America
  3. Use cases beyond the “typical” application of the CPTu: Diane Moug, Portland State University
  4. Question and answer session: Derrick Dasenbrock, Federal Highway Administration

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain advantages of CPT for certain geologies and design applications
  2. Discuss how to improve seismic testing with CPT
  3. Recover additional field data and compare it with other in-situ or laboratory tests

Professional Development Hours
