TRB Webinar: Remaining In-Service Life of Culverts and Other Geotechnical Assets

April 24, 2023

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM (EDT)

Past

When developing geotechnical asset management programs, there is a great interest in methods used to assess the condition of various assets to allow for trade-off analysis and budget allocation. TRB hosted a webinar on Monday, April 24, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern that focused on qualitative models to assess conditional and performance of in-service assets and forecast remaining service life for geotechnical management applications. Presenters shared current practices and gaps for assessing the condition of culverts and other geotechnical assets.

This webinar is sponsored by TRB’s Standing Technical Committee on Culverts, Buried Bridges and Soil Structure Interaction.

The slides are linked in the meeting materials. View the recorded webinar below.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. Estimating remaining life of in-service geotechnical assets: A case study on culverts – Ahmad Alhasan, Applied Research Associates

  2. Developing a corridor health index to allocate budgets: Chiniak Highway Pilot Project in Kodiak – Benjamin George, Landslide Technology

  3. Culvert durability and service life methodology: Current practice and future impacts – Kyle Brandon, Ohio Department of Transportation

  4. Question and answer session moderated by Jerry DiMaggio, Applied Research Associates

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the current practices and gaps in assessing conditions of culverts and other geotechnical assets

  2. Evaluate the methods to develop performance models for culverts based on different condition assessment data

  3. Implement performance forecasting to estimate remaining service life of in-service geotechnical assets
