TRB Webinar: Balanced Mix Design for Climate-Resilient Unpaved Roads

November 4, 2024

3:00 PM - 4:30 PM (EST)

Past

Fires and floods are causing infrastructure damage worldwide, leaving low-volume roads particularly vulnerable. Road that can be built or rebuilt efficiently, to quality standards, and with a durable driving surface will be most resilient to storm damage and reduce life-cycle costs. TRB hosted a webinar on Monday, November 4, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM Eastern that presented tools to help understand expected performances from wearing course materials on unpaved roads, how to blend different gravel sources to optimize unpaved road performance, and to select soil stabilization and dust control treatments that will produce a durable and climate resilient low-volume road driving surface.

This webinar was a follow on to TRB Webinar: Optimizing Unpaved Road Design with a Materials Blending Tool held on July 21, 2022.

This webinar was based on NCHRP Synthesis 485: Converting Paved Roads to Unpaved.

This webinar was sponsored by TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program and the Standing Technical Committee on Low Volume Roads.

The slides are available. Please contact trbwebinar@nas.edu for a link to the recording. There may be a $90 fee.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. Using web-based tools to select the most appropriate wearing course materials – David Jones, University of California, Davis

  2. Using web-based tools to select the most appropriate chemical treatments to improve performance – Stefan Louw, University of California, Davis

  3. Question and answer session moderated by Gordon R. Keller, Genesee Geotechnical

The first 60 minutes of the webinar were for presentations and the final 30 minutes were reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants can:

  1. Select unpaved road materials and understand likely performance

  2. Optimize unpaved road performance by blending two or more materials following a balanced mix design approach

  3. Select the most appropriate chemical treatment for a given material and set of road conditions

Professional Development Hours

This webinar was delivered as a scheduled – e-learning live event and is categorized within RCEP as Technical, Health and Safety.

Professional Development Hours (PDHs) earned on completion of this program were reported to the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP). Certificates of Completion are issued to all participants via the RCEP.net online system.
