The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine join the nation in commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. “We must never forget that fateful September day, nor how the country came together as one in response,” said the presidents of the National Academies in a statement.
In the weeks immediately following the attacks, we mobilized more than 100 of the nation’s top scientists, engineers, and medical experts to examine how science and technology could be harnessed to counter terrorism; the resulting landmark report, released in June 2002, identified a number of critical actions to enhance nation security. In the years since, our studies and activities have helped to inform and advance critical national security priorities and protect and enhance the health and well-being of our veterans.
