Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will conduct a workshop series on potential opportunities for and limitations to changing organizational policies and practices to support the success of STEM faculty from across U.S. society. The workshop series will take a multidimensional approach to exploring the full range of faculty career experiences across the Academy, beginning with the recruitment process, to include both tenure-track and non-tenure track faculty. Discussions will include analysis of the current state of research on organizational change in higher education and identification of future research questions in the field. The committee will commission papers to be presented during the workshop series, which will include exploration of the following questions:
- What is the current state of the research on organizational change in higher education? What significant gaps remain to be explored? How can findings be translated across disciplines and be applied specifically to STEM faculty?
- What approaches have individual institutions taken to increase their support for STEM faculty recruitment, hiring, development, and advancement?
- What constitutes successful organizational change in the areas of STEM faculty recruitment, hiring, development, and advancement? What metrics can be used to gauge progress?
- How can institutions and their leaders effectively identify and assess the highest priority challenges and limitations to manage successful change?
A Proceedings of the Workshop series will be produced and a dissemination and communications campaign will be conducted after the events.
